Aims And Objectives
1. Prof. Ferranti Wong Title : "Development of a Bioactive orthodontic adhesive" Enamel demineralisation due to fixed appliance orthodontic treatment can cause un-aesthetic white spot lesions, or even carious cavities in more severe cases. Hence, there is a need to develop an adhesive that can release the essential components such as Ca, PO4 and F ions to prevent demineralisation and aid remineralisation. Bioactive glass (BAG), first developed by Hench in 1969, is a reactive glass that can degrade/dissolve in tissue fluid to have a controlled release of these ions. 2.Prof. Brian Nattress Title"Recent Advances in Prosthodontics”
Content Outline
1. In this presentation, the development of an orthodontic adhesive containing bioactive glasses will be addressed, including their design, synthesis and characterisation. When this novel adhesive is subjected to both neutral simulated saliva (pH=7) and simulated acidic environment (pH=4), its effect on pH, long term release of ions, and formation of new material such as fluorapatites will be presented. Finally, when this novel adhesive was used to cement an orthodontic bracket to enamel, the results of micro-CT data of its effects on enamel demineralisation will also be presented. 2.
Target Audience
100-150 MoH Dentists and Dental Private Practitioners, also our Faculty of Dentistry academic staff.
