Aims And Objectives

Trauma occurs unexpectedly and in devastating ways. It does not distinguish among genders, races, religions, or socioeconomic status. Anybody, anywhere, anytime can be affected by a traumatic event. Trauma is the dominant cause of mortality between ages of 0 and 45 years but it also affects middle and older ages with a high frequency. Unfortunately, the awareness about the impact of trauma in the global health care scene is lagging far behind other diseases. Even if trauma kills many more patients worldwide than cancer or cardiovascular diseases, the investment in trauma care is much lower than of the investment in those illnesses. Trauma kills more patients than tuberculosis, HIV, and malaria together; yet, the allocation of funds to research and clinical care of those infectious diseases is far greater than trauma’s. To manage effectively the trauma epidemic -which is only destined to become bigger due to wars and industrialization- we need to create national trauma systems, universal trauma standards, and a stream of funds dedicated to trauma care. Trauma education and research are of paramount importance. The international medical community needs to understand the problem and, based on evidence, provide the focus and make the changes necessary to offer adequate care to the millions of people who suffer from the devastation of trauma every year around the world.
