Content Outline

ASD has been increasing in prevalence in resent reports namely attributed to decrease in childhood mortality and improvements in diagnosis. It is therefore more likely now to see a patient who falls along the spectrum and therefore it is more important now to be able to recognise possible signs of autism and be able to manage these patients and their co- morbidities in the general dental setting and specialist dental services. The first clinical manifestations is impaired social reciprocity, meaning patients may be unable to read/comprehend/express feelings. Second is impaired communication skills. This can appear as delayed language development, repeating words or failure to understand body language. Patients may also present with atypical behaviour including repetitive behaviour, hyperactivity, tantrums, and unusual responses to sensory input.
