Periodontal disease damages the supporting structures of the teeth due to the action of the pathogenic bacteria and their toxins (contained in the dental plaque and calculus).The disease is mostly symptom-free; which is why it is called the ‘Silent Killer.’ Authors have suggested that patients may not be referred for periodontal specialty care in a timely fashion, or may not be receiving adequate initial periodontal therapy in general dental practices. Recommendations are made that periodontal examination of each patient should be done at the initial visit away from patient complaint, to follow the scientific based guidelines for periodontal referral and to emphasize the value of interdisciplinary care, which plays role in retaining teeth.
