Aims And Objectives

The course will provide a comprehensive knowledge on the use of inhalation, oral and IV sedation to aid the provision of dental treatment for children and adolescents; and will enable residents to be competent in the administration of N2O/O2 sedation for dental treatment


Content Outline

• Knowledge of literature related to the use of conscious sedation for dental treatment • To comprehend the theoretical aspects of the utilisation of oral as well as IV sedation for the dental treatment for children and adolescents. • To understand the different aspects of dental anxiety • To understand the levels of sedation • To understand the therapeutic properties of N2O • To discuss the advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications of N2O/O2 sedation for dental treatment • To administer N2O/O2 sedation to patients in a clinical setting in a safe and efficient manner • To be competent in the following in relation to dental treatment utilising N2O/O2 sedation: o Patient selection criteria o Patient pre-assessment o Equipment set-up for the treatment o Recovery o Peri-operative monitoring • To be accustomed to the armamentarium of the inhalation sedation unit • To be competent in identifying complications associated with N2O/O2 sedation, and the prevention and management of potential medical emergencies • To discuss the possible occupational health hazards related to N2O/O2 sedation
