Content Outline

In today’s society, the quest for esthetic perfection is an established reality, As a result there is an increasing number of adult patients who seek orthodontic treatment to improve their appearance and function with social and psychological effects being the key motives for their demand. The main reason that leads adult individuals to seek orthodontic care is their dissatisfaction with their dental and/or facial appearance; these patients have greater perception of their malocclusion thus presenting higher expectations and demands concerning the treatment results. Another frequent reason is the need for isolated dental movements so that other dental procedures can be performed (prosthetic rehabilitation or dental cosmetics) Correction of the malocclusion has been shown to improve body image of dental and facial features, thus improving the overall Oral health. Orthodontic treatment in adults has its indications and contraindications, which must be carefully assessed before any action Adult orthodontics has many aspects in common with treating children and adolescents but the clinician should have an understanding of the important differences from a biological and psychological standpoint.
