Aims And Objectives

Course Objective: • Identify life-threatening conditions that will require resuscitation and identify risk factors that can help predict which infants may require resuscitation. • Identify the equipment and personnel needed to resuscitate a newborn. • Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize the neonate in respiratory failure or cardiopulmonary arrest. • Demonstrate how to manage the post-resuscitation period.


Content Outline

The NRP Provider Course introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. It focuses on the following “core” cases: • The changes in physiology that occur when a baby is born • Recognition of neonates that require resuscitative assistance • Steps of resuscitation • Use of bag-and-mask ventilation • Chest compressions • When and why endotracheal intubation is needed during resuscitation • When and what medications to give during resuscitation • Special situations that may complicate resuscitation and cause ongoing problems • Ethical considerations about starting and stopping resuscitation • Subsequent management of the baby who has required resuscitation)
