Content Outline
Mentorship is an old idea, stretching back to Homer’s The Odyssey. While classic senior-junior mentorship remains important in medicine, and in other spheres, newer models of mentorship can be powerful ways to enhance professional development and strengthen the culture of collaboration in an organization. Varied approaches exist, including peer mentorship, group mentorship, and multiple mentorship, each with advantages and drawbacks, and suited for different purposes. Furthermore, effective mentorship doesn’t “just happen”. It takes specific skills to be an effective mentor and to benefit maximally from mentorship. These skills can be learned, to the benefit of mentors, their protégés, and the institutions where they work. McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has developed extensive formal mentorship programming. We will share a taste of that experience in the CME session.
